What is a Fixed Partial Denture?

Partial Denture Middlesex, NJ

If you are missing either one or multiple teeth, you may want to ask your dentist if a partial denture is suitable for you. A beautiful smile can say a lot about you. When you meet someone for the first time, the first feature they may notice is your smile. There are several reasons a person may have lost one or more teeth. It could be because of a medical condition or medication. You may have suffered a traumatic injury, or the loss could be because of a lack of a regular oral hygiene routine.

Regardless of the reason behind the loss of teeth, you should never be without a great smile. With today's many options to missing teeth, you can have your confidence back in no time.

What is a fixed partial denture?

This is a dental procedure that is used to replace missing teeth. This denture is attached to the surrounding teeth. In some cases, the denture can be attached to dental implants to make them permanent. A denture is sometimes referred to as a bridge because it fills the gap left behind between missing teeth.

Dentures are made from a mold of your mouth. The entire process can take anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks. This timeframe will vary from patient to patient, and it can change because of the technique your dentist or specific laboratory uses to construct them. Typically, dentures are made from acrylic resin. This is a strong plastic that looks very much like your natural teeth. Acrylic resin is also very popular because it is the most affordable for most patients.

How to care for my dentures

A fixed denture is cared for a bit differently than a removable denture. You should always maintain proper oral care, like your natural teeth. Use a soft bristle to get in between the hard-to-reach places gently. Even though it is fixed, you should remove your partial while sleeping. This is when bacteria can build up and cause harm to your teeth and gums.

You should avoid hard foods to prevent any damage to your dentures. It is also very important that you keep up regular visits with your dentist. During these visits, your dentist will evaluate your dentures to be sure they fit correctly and in good condition. Be sure to listen to any suggestions your dentist may have during your appointments. You want to keep your dentures in new condition for as long as possible.

Learn more about your oral health

Your oral health is vital to maintaining your natural teeth and your dentures' strength and good condition. Always brush and floss your teeth daily and use mouthwash. Try to limit the number of snacks and sugary drinks between meals. If you have a partial denture, you may want to do everything possible to keep the remaining natural teeth healthy and strong. This is important to keep your smile confident and welcoming for as long as possible.
